Panel and Headgate Readers

Basics

There are various manufacturers and types of panel readers available today.  With the recent surge in EID use, most manufacturers are compliant with tags built under the animal ISO 11874 - 11875 protocol.  Basically, these panels will read all 134.2 KHz tags (GAM TAGS, Destron, Allflex, etc.).  However, there may be some proprietary information associated with the tag that can only be read with the manufacturers reader (i.e. Destron Biothermo Microchip, Avid Microchips and tags that can record information).

Panel Installation

There are several key factors that will affect optimum functionality of panel reader systems:

  • External noise generated from electric motors, overhead powerlines and others.
  • Metal interferance (typical installation should include wood or a non-metal barrier between the panel and metal components).
  • Ear tag placement, be consistent when tagging animals- always tag in the animals left ear.
  • Speed of Commerce, try to keep animals at a steady pace- avoid bunching cattle.
  • Panel placement, for alley and loading dock applications more than one panel may be required- adjust the panel at the appropriate height for the type of animal being scanned.

Most of these key elements can be controlled with proper installation.

Panel Size

The size of the panel is dependant upon the distance of read.  Fort Supply offers a 3 or 4 feet read range on panels by Destron Fearing.  We recommend that the Large (4 feet read) panel is used for most installations to maximize the read range.

Headgate Readers

Headgate readers are designed to be attached to the chute system for hands-free reading.  The headgate system functions like a hand held reader, however, these systems are live throughout processing.  The information is passed from the headgate reader to the Axiz SB-1 Stationary System and can be configured to pass data into the hand held PC software, FaST EID.

Small Animal Portal Reader

This advanced antenna design features a multi-dimensional, multi-induction, electromagnetic field chamber that significantly improves tag detection at the speed-of-commerce, regardless of animal tag placement or orientation. The Ranger Portal antenna is designed to operate with numerous reader technologies including Farnam, Ytex, and Destron-Fearing, and will interrogate all Low Frequency (LF) livestock EID tags (HDX and FDX).  The small animal portal is ideal for Sheep, Goats, Hogs, Newborn Calves, and other small livestock fitted with EID ear tags or implantable microchips.

This is a rugged, mobile, all-weather portal antenna that can be quickly deployed and setup at any location, even remote locations without power. The Ranger Portal antennas unique built-in identification and analysis alert features provide animal handlers with instant speed-of-commerce feedback on the identification and status of livestock passing thru the portal.  The Small Animal Portal Reader incorporates the use of the Archer and FaST EID software.
